Bright berries, and crisp salads mark the summer days. Many of us are unhappy when warm summer days are replaced with cool and shorter autumn days. We miss the summer vegetables and fruits but please don’t fret, as there are many colorful fruits and vegetables that are delicious and high in nutritious value
In Autumn, we have dark yellow, bright orange and deep green fruits and vegetables. The deeper the color of the fruits/veggies, healthier it is. Autumn vegetables are rich in phytochemicals that increase the immunity of the system and keep the diseases at bay.
Five Autumn Vegetables
They belong to the mustard family. The color of this vegetable ranges from yellow to purple and have a bitter flavor. However turnip is an excellent source of vitamin C and dietary fiber. The phytochemical keeps the free radicals in check.
- Sweet Potatoes
Its a storage root and rich in vitamin A and C. Considered to be an ideal choice for those with diabetes as the glycemic index is very low. That is carbohydrates are released slowly which in turn maintains a steady sugar level.
This autumn vegetable in loaded with vitamin A, C and folate. Carotenoids in this veggie, reduces the risk of cancer and also lowers the risk of heart disease. The seeds are also rich in nutritional value and contains zinc and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Winter Squash
Summer squash is tender and has edible seeds and rind. Winter squash has tough rinds and seeds and inedible fibrous center. This vegetable has heart- healthy nutrients, vitamin A, fiber and folate. Also the quality of ripened winter squash increases during storage.
It resembles white carrots and have sweet flavor. This vegetable is rich in vitamin C, calcium, iron and fiber. Usually used in soups and as a replacement for carrot and potatoes.

Rich in flavonoids. Adding this fruit to your diets will reduce the risk of heart disease as well as several types of cancer. There are numerous recipes that you can try out with apples.
These are also known as mandarin oranges. Clementine can be used in salads and chicken dishes.
This fruit is high in fiber. These soluble fiber help to reduce blood cholesterol and maintain a healthy blood sugar level.
This is one of the berries that ripen in the autumn. Anthocyanins, the heart healthy antioxidants are found in this berry. Cranberries can be pickled, made into sauces, preserved and used in salads.
They have a chewy texture that makes it tasty. It’s an excellent source of dietary fiber and calcium. Figs can be used in cookies, desserts and salads.
